Greensboro's little indie that could....

Former guest Jay Floyd should pat himself on the back. His locally-filmed indie Forgiving the Franklins made it for a third week at The Carousel Luxury Cinemas on 1305 Battleground Ave.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I'm pretty sure no other 'real indie' has played that long in Greensboro for a while.

Way to go, Jay!

Well, Forgiving the Franklins certainly deserves it. I applaud Greensboro for supporting it. I saw it at Sundance and have never understood why it didn't receive more acclaim and attention. Stunning movie, really. I've always felt it would get some traction from somewhere. Maybe Greensboro is the start of something big for Mr. Floyd.

I sort of look at Forgiving the Franklins as a resume piece. A genuine, low-budget indie, it's not the kind of 'INDEPENDENT' feature that's going to play at multi-plexes across the country a la Little Miss Sunshine. Floyd didn't have the same access to finances or crew members that LMS did, and the filmmaker will admit that.

However, in spite of its budgetary set-backs, what the film did have was a good script, and an original voice and point of view, both of which are good reasons for a studio to give him the real money needed to create a more marketable film on his second go around. Here's hoping.
